I found a pre-existing vector based poster that I thought had potential to be put into motion. I started by sketching and conceptualizing the story I wanted to tell with the visuals in the poster.
Inspired by the design of the trains, I wanted to show them traveling through varying scenes. Because the title of the poster is Shinkansen and showcases different designs of Japanese bullet trains, I chose well-known scenes from Japan.
Overview
After exploring my idea through sketches, I began drawing each scene in Illustrator. I researched imagery from each location and translated that to a style and perspective that matched the trains. I carefully redrew each train, while referencing the original, to make each one easier to animate.
Once the scenes were animated, I explored music and sound effect options. I decided on Take Me by Casiopia, a Japanese jazz fusion band. For sound effects, I generated an audio reminiscent to the directional voices that play in train stations.

process
Sketching came first after I decided which poster to animate. I started with different iterations of my story, from there narrowing it down and visualizing what each scene will look like.
The early stages of this project was a lot of drawing in order to capture each location’s detail. I separated each scenes’ layers to then transfer to after effects. By separating each ones’ layers, I was able to animate each part of the scene independently. This lead to a more dynamic result.
takeaways
The final product of this animation ended up being a combination of techniques that I really enjoyed working on. I learned a lot about animation and the principles of motion, the result ended up being one of my favorite projects.
