Once Around – A board game where paths cross and continue…
I chose to design the branding and packaging of a board game, I landed on outer space for the designs and theme. The final result included a fully playable game equipped with a board, timer, dice, game pieces, and question/action cards.
Overview
I was very excited to work on this project because I am an avid board game player, I appreciate the thought behind the game play and the intentional design that supports the intended narrative. These were factors I landed into when designing my own game, I wanted the story to feel immersive and meaningful.
Starting from sketching, to digital iterations, then 3D renderings, and finally physical staged photography, Once Around started to come to life. I had so much fun getting to explore every single detail that made up the final result.

As part of me exploring ways to make this game feel real and immersive, I decided to also design and brand the game developing company behind the game itself.
I started by setting the tone of what I wanted the intention of the game to be, meaningful and emotional. I wanted people to play this game to get to know each other on a deeper level. This became the messaging and goal behind Spirro Games. A game developing company that strives to build connections and deeper understanding of those around you.
I designed the logo and card insert that is included with the game. When the game is opened, the “message from Spirro Games” adds to the immersive experience of the player.
process
I analyzed common board game packaging systems andfound similarities and outliers across the group. Most commonly, rectangular boxes that contained slots to organize all the game components. I also took into consideration my experience withboard games, I love a package that is well designed while also serving a purpose. When approaching my design, my goal was to create an eye catching look that integrated the package into the game experience itself.
I made most of my design choices with the consumer’s experience in mind. This included creating a well rounded brand that starts with the manufacturer and ends with pieces that make up the game play. Thisguided me through how I wanted each side of the box to look and work, as well as how players would be able to play the game.
takeaways
While working on this project, I got to express myself creatively and translate that to a product that could exist on the shelf today. This taught me about my own style and how to apply that to industry standards to be successful.
